Life on the Farm: Fresh Carrots, Garlic Scapes & Summer Blooms

Updated: 18 hours ago

Some of the most important things we grow were planted years before Honeydew Farm ever existed.

Last Sunday, Amber spent the afternoon with her grandmother, sharing lunch before picking out bedding plants for her garden. By the end of the day, the car was overflowing with flowers, and Grandma rode home with plants tucked into every available space—including her lap.

It was one of those simple afternoons that quietly reminds you where everything began.

Long before there were flower fields, greenhouse tunnels, or market mornings, there was a little girl learning to love flowers alongside her grandmother. Those afternoons together planted the first seeds of what would eventually become Honeydew Farm's flower fields.

Today, every bouquet we harvest carries a little piece of that story.

Life on the Farm

Summer has certainly made itself at home this week.

Several days of steady rain, followed by a powerful overnight storm, brought much-needed moisture to the farm. Thankfully, everything weathered the storms beautifully. The vegetables are thriving, the flower fields continue to bloom, and the cooler temperatures have helped keep everything looking its best.

The farm has another new arrival this week.

Cosmo welcomed a litter of kittens this week, but she's decided they're staying hidden for now. Like many protective mothers, she's keeping them tucked safely away until she's ready to introduce them.

Some surprises are worth waiting for.

Fresh From the Farm

Every week brings something new to harvest.

This week we're excited to introduce fresh carrots, one of the sweetest signs that summer harvests have officially begun.

We're also harvesting garlic scapes, one of the shortest—but most anticipated—seasons of the year. If you've never cooked with garlic scapes before, this is one of the best weeks of the season to give them a try. Their mild garlic flavor makes them perfect for pesto, roasting, grilling, stir-fries, and countless summer recipes.

Because garlic scapes are only available for a short time each season, they're always a favorite for those who know to watch for them.

In Bloom

Summer showers have been a welcome gift for the flower fields, and the ranunculus are now making their way into this season's bouquets.

Each harvest brings a fresh mix of blush pink, creamy white, sunshine yellow, soft peach, and vibrant orange blooms, making every bouquet a little different from the last.

There's even more to look forward to as the season unfolds. Our snapdragons are growing quickly and will begin adding height, texture, and another layer of color to the flower field as well as our bouquets.

One bloom fades, another begins, and that's one of the joys of following the seasons on the farm.

Recipe of the Week

Garlic Scape Pesto

Garlic scapes only have a short season, making this the perfect time to enjoy them while they're fresh. This bright, flavorful pesto is delicious tossed with pasta, spread on sandwiches, spooned over grilled vegetables, or served alongside chicken or fish. One of our favorite ways to enjoy garlic scapes is in a simple homemade pesto that's fresh, bright, and incredibly versatile.

Homemade garlic scape pesto made with fresh garlic scapes, walnuts, Parmesan cheese, olive oil, and lemon.

Ingredients

  • 8 garlic scapes, chopped

  • ½ cup walnuts (or pine nuts)

  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

  • ½ cup olive oil

  • Juice of ½ lemon

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Combine the garlic scapes, walnuts, Parmesan, and lemon juice in a food processor.

  2. Blend while slowly drizzling in the olive oil until smooth.

  3. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  4. Enjoy immediately or refrigerate for up to one week.

Coming Soon on the Farm

Every week gives us something new to look forward to.

Our snapdragons are almost ready to bloom, bringing another burst of color to the flower field. Summer vegetables continue to size up in the gardens, and before long we'll be sharing even more fresh harvests from the fields.

The season is just beginning, and we can't wait to see what the next few weeks bring.
