French Breakfast Radishes at Honeydew Farm: What's Growing This Week

The season is beginning to shift at Honeydew Farm.

While we're still bringing plenty of vegetable, herb, and flower starts to market, we're also beginning to harvest some of the first fresh crops of the year. Every week the farm looks a little different as seedlings move into the field, crops mature, and new harvests begin to arrive.

This week we're highlighting our French Breakfast Radishes, checking in on the garlic crop, and sharing a look at some of the work happening behind the scenes as we prepare for another busy growing season.

Whether you're planting your garden, shopping for fresh produce, or simply following along with life on the farm, we're glad you're here.

On the Farm This Week

Spring planting is in full swing.

Much of the work happening right now won't be fully visible until later this summer, but it's some of the most important work of the season. This week Alex has been preparing beds using a broadfork, a tool that helps loosen and aerate the soil while preserving soil structure and biology.

Healthy soil creates healthier plants, stronger harvests, and a more resilient farm.

Meanwhile, crops across the farm continue to grow. Our garlic is putting on strong growth and looking healthy as we move toward summer, while greenhouse crops continue to thrive.

Every week brings noticeable changes across the farm, and it's exciting to watch the season unfold one planting and one harvest at a time.

Featured Harvest of the Week: French Breakfast Radishes

One of the first fresh harvests of the season has arrived.

French Breakfast Radishes are known for their beautiful red tops, crisp white tips, and mild peppery flavor. They're slightly sweeter and less intense than many traditional radishes, making them a favorite for salads, sandwiches, grazing boards, and simple spring meals.

Freshly harvested from Honeydew Farm, they'll be available at market this week while supplies last.

Recipe of the Week: French Breakfast Radishes with Butter and Sea Salt

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the most memorable.

Ingredients

• 1 bunch French Breakfast Radishes

• Good-quality salted butter, softened

• Flaky sea salt

• Fresh cracked pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash and trim the radishes.

  2. Leave a small amount of the greens attached for presentation.

  3. Spread softened butter onto a serving plate or small bowl.

  4. Dip radishes into the butter and sprinkle lightly with sea salt.

  5. Enjoy immediately.

The crisp texture of the radishes paired with rich butter and sea salt has been a staple of French tables for generations.

Garden Tip of the Week

Not sure which tomato variety to choose?

For slicing:

• Brandywine Organic Heirloom

• Valencia

For sauces and canning:

• Amish Paste

• San Marzano II Organic

For snacking:

• Gold Nugget Organic Cherry

• Supersweet 100

For something unique:

• Green Zebra Heirloom

Planting a few different varieties can extend your harvest and give you a wider range of flavors throughout the season.
