August has a way of filling every corner of the day. Our August farm life right now is a mix of harvesting vegetables, cutting flowers, caring for animals, putting food away for later, and finding time for family in the middle of it all.
This week brought plenty of each—and one exciting new connection that will take some of what we grow a little farther from home.
August Farm Life: What’s Growing This Week
The vegetables continue producing, so we’ll have much of the same late-summer harvest available again this week:
French fingerling potatoes
Green beans
Pickling cucumbers
Zucchini
Bell peppers
Sugar Rush Peach peppers
The flower fields are especially beautiful right now. Sunflowers continue to open across the rows, and zinnias are giving us incredible shades of pink, red and everything in between.
Along with the other flowers blooming around the farm, there is no shortage of color making its way into this week’s bouquets.
These are the weeks when it feels like every walk through the garden ends with something in your hands.
From Our Fields to Your Moments
Custom Flowers From Honeydew Farm
The flower harvest hasn’t only been keeping our market table full.
We’ve also been busy creating custom flower arrangements for funerals, baby showers and other events.
One of the things we love about growing flowers is seeing where they go after they leave the field. Sometimes they’re there to celebrate a new beginning. Sometimes they help honor someone important. And sometimes they’re simply there to make a gathering feel a little more special.
Each arrangement begins with what’s blooming here at Honeydew Farm and is created for the moment it’s meant to be part of.
A New Connection for Honeydew Farm
Partnering With Cooks of Crocus Hill
We’re excited to share that Honeydew Farm is partnering with Cooks of Crocus Hill in St. Paul for their farm crop shares.
For a small farm here in Park Rapids, it’s exciting to see something grown in our fields travel farther and become part of meals in another Minnesota community.
The work still begins the same way it always has—right here in the soil—but the places it can reach continue to grow.
Small farm. Deep roots. Growing connections.
Five Kittens & One Very Patient Visitor
Our niece Rosie spent the last five days with us, and the kittens quickly became one of her favorite parts of being here.
We currently have five baby kittens around the
farm, and Rosie made sure they received plenty of attention and care while she was visiting.
She also started making progress with Cosmo’s two kittens, who are still much more cautious around people. They aren’t ready to be held yet, but Rosie was able to get
close to them—which is more progress than we had been making.
Apparently patience works with kittens too.
Many Hands Make Farm Work Lighter
Chicken Processing Day
Another big farm job is officially behind us.
Our chicken processing day was a success, and we put away 46 birds for the months ahead.
Alex’s parents, Scott and Sharon, came to help us, which made a long day of work a family effort.
Raising our own food means being part of every step—from caring for the animals as they grow to processing and putting that food away. Days like this are a lot of work, but they’re also an important part of why we farm the way we do.
We were grateful for the extra hands.

From the Honeydew Farm Table
Summer Vegetable & Herb Flatbread
This is an easy way to turn fresh summer vegetables into dinner without spending the whole evening in the kitchen. The vegetables can change depending on what you have on hand, which makes it perfect for this time of year.

Ingredients
1 prepared flatbread or pizza crust
1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
½ small zucchini, thinly sliced
½ cup cherry tomatoes, halved
¼ small red onion, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup shredded mozzarella
¼ cup crumbled feta
Fresh basil, roughly torn
Salt and black pepper
Optional: balsamic glaze for finishing
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 425°F.
Place the flatbread on a baking sheet and brush lightly with olive oil. Sprinkle the mozzarella evenly over the top.
Arrange the sliced bell pepper, zucchini, tomatoes and red onion over the cheese. Season lightly with salt and black pepper, then sprinkle the feta over everything.
Bake for 10–14 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender and the edges of the flatbread are crisp and golden.
Remove from the oven and finish with fresh basil. Add a drizzle of balsamic glaze if you’d like a little sweetness.
Honeydew Farm Tip
Flatbreads are an easy way to cook with the season. Use the vegetables you have, leave off the ones you don’t, and let whatever is freshest determine dinner.

Looking Ahead
August farm life continues to move quickly.
The flower fields are still producing some of their brightest color of the season, vegetables continue coming out of the garden, custom flower orders are keeping us busy, and there is always more food to harvest and put away for the months ahead.
We’re also looking forward to seeing where our new partnership with Cooks of Crocus Hill takes us as some of what we grow begins reaching families beyond our usual market communities.
There is still plenty of summer left to enjoy—and plenty happening here before the season begins to change.
